SCHOOL COMMITTEE MINUTES
December 8, 2008

The School Committee held a retreat on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Training Room, Third Floor, Town Hall.   Chairman Meyler called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.   

Members Present:        Karen Adelman Foster, Anne Blanchard, Dirk Coburn, David Margil, Steve Meyler, Anne Zernicke

Members Absent: David Murphy

Others Present: Peter Sanchioni Superintendent
        Karen LeDuc     Assistant Superintendent
        William Hurley  Director of Fiscal & Management Services
        Sharon Reilly   Recording Secretary

Chairman Meyler reviewed the agenda for the evening.

Ms. Martha White, Town Administrator joined the meeting at 7:12 p.m.  The administration requested an Executive Session at 7:12 p.m. to discuss collective bargaining in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 39, Section 23b of the Massachusetts General Laws.  Mr. Coburn moved for approval for the Committee to enter into Executive Session.  Mr. Margil seconded.   A roll call vote was taken and all members present were in favor of entering into Executive Session.  

At 9:20 p.m., the School Committee returned to open session.

Chairman Meyler provided the School Committee with an update of discussions held at the Expense Control Taskforce regarding the suggestion of consolidating some of the town and school departments.  

Chairman Meyler would like to have discussions at a future meeting regarding the use of advertising to offset the costs of the educational system, such as signs around the playing fields.  

At 9:50 p.m. Ms. Blanchard and Ms. Zernicke excused themselves from the meeting.

Ms. Adelman Foster provided an update of the Financial Planning Committee meetings.  She stressed the need to develop a process and priorities.  Chairman Meyler suggested a meeting of the School Committee’s representatives to the Financial Planning Committee (himself and Karen Adelman Foster) along with the administration to try and come up with a process and priorities.  

At 10:00 p.m., Mr. Margil moved to adjourn.  Ms. Adelman Foster seconded.  It was approved by a unanimous vote of those present.
