SCHOOL COMMITTEE RETREAT
October 29, 2007
The School Committee held a retreat on Monday, October 29, 2007, at 7:00 p.m. in the Retirement Training Conference Room, Town Hall, Third Floor. Chairman Wynn called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Members Present: Karen Adelman Foster, Dirk Coburn, Rick Wynn, Dave Murphy
Anne Zernicke (present at 7:25), Anne Blanchard (present at 7:45).
Members Absent: Steve Meyler
Others present: James Connolly, Superintendent of Schools
Karen Leacu LeDuc, Ph.D., Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment.
Lauren Gilbert, Director of Pupil Services
Matthew LaCava, Assistant Director of Pupil Services
Mary Ellen Sowyrda of Murphy, Hesse, Toomey & Lehane, LLP, Special Education Attorney to Natick Public Schools
SUMMARY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION IN MASSACHUSETTS
Ms. Mary Ellen Sowyrda presented a summary of the standards, requirements, and restrictions involved in special education in Massachusetts, including how discipline may be handled for special education students since the reauthorization of relevant legislation in 2004.
SUMMARY OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PROCEDURES IN NATICK
Ms. Lauren Gilbert and Mr. Matthew LaCava presented an introduction to special education-related policies and procedures in Natick, and summarized the recent Coordinated Program Review of the district’s special education services.

At 10:05, a motion to adjourn was made by Ms. Karen Adelman Foster, seconded by Mr. Dirk Coburn, and approved unanimously.
