SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
September 10, 2007

The School Committee held a meeting on Monday, September 10, 2007 at 8:30 p.m. in the School Committee Room, 3rd Floor, Town Hall.   Chairman Wynn called the meeting to order at 8:30 p.m.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Mr. Meyler moved for approval of the School Committee minutes of June 13, 2007.  Mr. Coburn seconded.  They were unanimously approved.

Mr. Meyler moved for approval of the School Committee minutes of June 18, 2007.  Mr. Coburn seconded.  They were unanimously approved.

Mr. Meyler moved for approval of the School Committee minutes of June 25, 2007.  Ms. Adelman Foster seconded.  They were unanimously approved.

Mr. Meyler moved for approval of the School Committee Executive Session minutes of June 13, 2007.  Ms. Blanchard seconded.  They were unanimously approved.

The Executive Session minutes of June 18, 2007 will be corrected and brought back to the next meeting.


OCTOBER TOWN MEETING – ARTICLE I FY08 OMNIBUS BUDGET

Mr. Connolly reported that the Finance Committee has scheduled a hearing for Article I (Omnibus Budget – FY08) for September 20 to discuss any adjustments to the FY08 budget.  Mr. Connolly recommended that the School Committee increase its FY08 budget appropriation in the amount of $743,119.  This increase is made up of:

funds cut from the Spring Town meeting                  $268,119
Increased special education tuitions                    $440,000
Increase in special education transportation            $  35,000
                                                                               $743,119

Mr. Coburn moved for approval for the School Committee support the recommendation of the superintendent for these items outlined above.  Ms. Adelman Foster seconded.  After some discussion, Mr. Wynn called for a vote.  It was unanimously approved.  

APPROVAL OF DONATIONS

Mr. Connolly requested that the School Committee accept a donation from Middlesex Savings for two scoreboards.   The bank’s name would appear at the bottom of the scoreboards.  In addition, Mr. Connolly indicated that the School Committee needs to deal with a broader issue on advertising in the schools and will need to develop a policy, but didn’t feel this donation should be held up.  Ms. Karen Adelman Foster moved for approval to accept this donation.  Mr. Coburn seconded.  It was unanimously approved.  The School Committee will be developing a policy on advertising.

Mr. Coburn moved for approval to accept the Natick Education Foundation donation in the amount of $41,943.65 for their June 2007 grant awards.  Mr. Meyler seconded.  It was unanimously approved.  

APPROVAL OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL

Mr. Coburn moved for approval on a request made by Mr. John Hughes for Natick High School Boy’s and Girls’ Cross Country teams to travel to Warwick, RI on Saturday, September 29 to participate in the New Balance Ocean State Cross Country Invitational.  Ms. Zernicke seconded.  It was unanimously approved.

MEMBERS CONCERNS

·       Mr. Wynn provided an update on the meetings held by the Town’s Financial Planning Committee which is made up of two members of the School Committee, two members of the Finance Committee, two members of the Board of Selectmen.  They have been meeting weekly at 7:00 a.m.   Meetings are public and anyone may attend if they wish.  He reported that a consensus should be reached prior to the October Town Meeting on whether or not the town will require an operational override (will not include the final dollar number).  It will then be up to the Board of Selectmen as to whether or not to proceed forward to the voters.

·       Ms. Blanchard requested that the School Calendar be reviewed to determine if a start day after Labor Day is feasible.  Mr. Connolly explained that this is scheduled for the November 5 meeting and he will provide the history on this controversial subject.  

·       Ms. Zernicke requested that a list of upcoming School Committee agenda items be posted on the website.  Mr. Wynn indicated that this is in the works and should be available shortly.

·       Mr. Wynn asked that if any member(s) were interested in attending the annual MASC Conference on November 14th in Hyannis, please let him know.  

·       Dr. LeDuc discussed the recently published Learning Standards that are available to parents as handouts and on the web for grades K-4.  Work is continuing for grades 5-6 for next year.   An explanation letter will be going home to parents.  

At 9:15 p.m., Mr. Meyler moved to adjourn.  Mr. Coburn seconded.  It was unanimously approved.
