SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
October 5, 2004
The School Committee held a meeting on Tuesday, October 5, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Committee Room, third floor, Town Hall. Chair Packer called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m.

Chair Packer asked if anyone wished to come forward for public speak. No one came forward.
APPROVAL OF OUT OF STATE TRAVEL
Mr. Hughes requested the School Committee’s approval for an out of state trip for high school students to travel to Newport, Rhode Island to “The Breakers” on Friday, October 15, 2004 with members of the English Department in preparation for their study on “The American Dream” unit – The Great Gatsby and Death of a Salesman. Mr. Freedman moved for approval of this trip. Ms. Broekel seconded. It was unanimously approved.
Mr. Hughes also requested the School Committee’s approval for two additional trips
1. Trip to the Tropical Rainforest in Ecuador, April 16-24, 2005 organized by Mr. Robert Jekanowski – Science Department
2. Marine Biology trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, April 15-22, 2005, sponsored by Mr. Dan Hinnenkamp – Science Department.
Both Mr. Jekanowski and Mr. Hinnenkamp were present and responded to questions.
Ms. Broekel moved for approval of these trips pending appropriate insurance policies are in place (details to be provided to the superintendent through Mr. Hughes). Mr. Haugland seconded. They were unanimously approved.
STANDARDIZED TEST REPORTS – SAT/SATII/AP/MCAS
Mrs. Jan Parsons presented the School Committee with a report of SATI, SATII and AP Scores for the Class of 2004.
Mr. Hughes reviewed the MCAS retest results of the students in the Class of 2005. Dr. Karen LeDuc provided the School Committee with an analysis of the MCAS 2004 results including test analysis reports which were generated using TestWiz – an MCAS analysis software.
UPDATE ON ENROLLMENT
Mr. Connolly provided the School Committee with current enrollment and projected enrollments. He reported on the meeting held this afternoon with the State Treasurer’s office, State Representatives and State Senators regarding the SBAB Program. The timing of the high school project will have to be monitored. A request was made to have the High School Building Committee work with the Chair of the School Committee and the Superintendent to come up with a timeline for this project.
TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
Mrs. Mary Ellen Dunn provided an update on the Transportation Program which included ridership, service levels and budget update.
PERSONNEL ACTIONS
The following personnel actions were reviewed:
EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE: Professional Staff
Alicia Cohen, special education teacher at Brown School. Maternity leave of absence is effective January 3, 2005 to April 1, 2005.
Kimberly Lambert, special education preschool teacher at Bennett-Hemenway School. Maternity leave of absence is effective January 10, 2005 to April 1, 2005.
Maureen McNally, art teacher at Natick High School. Maternity leave of absence is effective December 6, 2004 to March 11, 2005.
CHANGE IN ASSIGNMENT: Support Staff
Audrey Arthur, to be part-time (4.75 hrs/day) food service worker at Natick High School effective September 27, 2004.
Robin Murray, to be part-time (4 hrs/day) food service worker at Memorial School effective September 27, 2004.
APPOINTMENTS: Professional Staff
Stephanie Cohen, to be kindergarten literacy tutor [grand funded] at Memorial School effective September 27, 2004. Salary, $22.67 per hour.
Nanci Farquharson, to be grade 5 long-term substitute teacher at Wilson Middle School effective September 3, 2004. Salary, $136.00 per day.
Danielle Leshinski, to be lead instructor in the ASAP Program at Wilson Middle School effective September 13, 2004. Salary, $14.00 per hour.
Marisa Torcasio, to be kindergarten long-term substitute teacher [grant funded] at Memorial School effective September 27, 2004. Salary, $136.00 per day.
APPOINTMENTS: Support Staff
Elizabeth Ailinger, to be (.5) student support facilitator at Bennett-Hemenway School effective September 24, 2004. Salary, Step 3.
Kendra Gleeson, to be cafeteria monitor at Johnson School effective September 20, 2004. Salary, $9.95 per hour.
David Lombardi, to be student support facilitator at Natick High School North Star Program effective September 8, 2004. Salary, Step 3.
Ismael Calderon, to be Jr. I custodian at Natick High School [evening shift] effective October 12, 2004. Salary, Step 1.
APPROVAL FOR FRAMINGHAM TO JOIN TEC
Mr. Connolly reported that the TEC Board of Directors voted on October 1 to accept Framingham for membership into TEC. He requested the School Committee’s approval to accept Framingham into TEC. Mr. Haugland moved for approval on this request. Ms. Broekel seconded. It was unanimously approved.
COMMUNICATION, PETITIONS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Ms. Broekel announced that on October 17, Tilly & Salvy’s Bacon Street Farm will be having their pumpkin sale where 100% of the proceeds from the sale of pumpkins between 2:00 pm -5:00 pm will be donated to the school of your choice.
