SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
March 26, 2003

The School Committee held a meeting on Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. in the School Committee Room, Third Floor, Town Hall.   Mr. Connolly called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.

Members Present:        Peg Broekel, Michael Cashman, Jonathan Freedman, Henry Haugland, Diane Packer,
                        Ted Wynne, Kristine Van Amsterdam

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

Mr. Connolly requested the School Committee's approval of the meeting minutes of March 17, 2003 and the Executive Session minutes of March 17, 2003.  Mrs. Van Amsterdam moved for approval of these minutes.  Mr. Wynne seconded.  They were unanimously approved.  


REORGANIZATION OF THE SCHOOL COMMITEEE

Mr. Connolly congratulated Ms. Packer and Mrs. Van Amsterdam on their re-election to the School Committee for another three-year term.   Mr. Connolly began the reorganization process.

Mr. Connolly called for nominations for Chair of the School Committee:
Ms. Broekel nominated Mr. Henry Haugland as Chair of the School Committee.  Mrs. Van Amsterdam seconded.  It was unanimously approved.

Mr. Connolly called for nominations for Vice Chair of the School Committee:
Mrs. Van Amsterdam nominated Diane Packer as Vice Chair of the School Committee.   Mr. Haugland seconded.  It was unanimously approved.

Mr. Connolly called for nominations for Clerk of the School Committee:
Mr. Haugland nominated Ms. Broekel as Clerk of the School Committee.   Mr. Cashman seconded.  It was unanimously approved.

Mr. Connolly called for nominations for Recording Secretary of the School Committee:
Ms. Broekel nominated Mrs. Sharon Reilly as Recording Secretary of the School Committee.   Mrs. Van Amsterdam seconded.  It was unanimously approved.

Mr. Connolly also requested that the School Committee reaffirm Attorney Naomi Stonberg as the School Committees attorney.  Mr. Freedman moved for approval to reaffirm Attorney Naomi Stonberg as the School Committee's attorney.  Ms. Packer seconded.  It was unanimously approved.  

Mr. Connolly reported that Mrs. Van Amsterdam is willing to continue to serve as the School Committee's representative for the Athletic Advisory Board.   Other members of the Athletic Board have been contacted and would like to continue.  They are John Brown, Ed Casey, Jim Connolly,  Dight Crain, Mike Fitzgerald, Tom Lamb, Rich Peristere, Richard Pingree, Vi Tutuny, Jim Webb, Jim White.

Mr. Connolly requested that the School Committee look over the list of other subcommittee assignments and to notify the Chair of the subcommittees that they would like to serve on.   Action may be taken at the meeting of April 7, 2003.  

Chairman Haugland thanked the Committee for his appointment to Chair.   Ms. Broekel reported that Mr. Haugland is beginning his sixth year of service on the School Committee.  She is confident he understands the roles and responsibilities of the School Committee in working effectively with the Superintendent and Administration.   He has been understanding and appreciative of the working relationship as committee members over the course of the past number of years.  She looks forward to working with Mr. Haugland as Chair and Ms. Packer as Vice Chair.

The meeting adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
