SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING
April 30, 2001
The School Committee held a meeting on Monday, April 30, 2001 in the Lower Meeting Room of the Morse Institute Library. Chairwoman Broekel called the meeting to order at 7:33 p.m.

Dr. Goldberg requested a moment of silence in memory of the 4 students from the Oak Hill Middle School in Newton who were tragically killed in a recent bus accident.
PUBLIC SPEAK
Chairwoman Broekel asked if any wished to come forward for Public Speak. No one came forward.
SPOTLIGHT ON EDUCATION – MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATION
Mr. Pat Schettini, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, along with the middle school principals, Ms. Ruth Evans and Mr. John Hughes held the fourth Spotlight on Education session on The Middle School Model. They discussed:

· Who is the middle school student?
· What are our guides?
· Why are the middle years unique?
· What are the characteristics?
· Why the middle school model?
· What are the implications?
Both Ms. Evans and Mr. Hughes indicated that the middle schools are at approximately 40% of the Middle School Model and hope to implement further if they could get more resources.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
